Adnams Rye Malt Whisky won Best English Rye in the World Whiskies Awards 2024. This is the third time it has received the Gold Medal, also reaching the top spot in 2021 and 2022. It is made from a mash bill of 25% East Anglian malted barley and 75% rye. Our rye is grown by Jonathan Adnams at his farm in Reydon, just up the road from our distillery in Southwold. Rye is a complex grain that creates a thick, syrup-like 'mash' due to its protein structure and ability to retain water. The resulting whisky has great depth and character and a drier, spicier finish. Our Rye Whisky has spent at least five years in brand new French oak barrels before bottling.
Warm Vanilla
  • Evening Standard

It's a lively drink, the kind of whisky to sip through a party - it's certainly not sleep-inducing.

  • The Independent

Here, the rye gives the whisky a great depth of character, aged for at least five years in brand new French oak Bordeaux casks. Bold oaky vanilla aromas are joined by some fudge and black peppercorn, while the palate is rich and slightly spicy, with spice continuing on the long finish. Best served neat, with a splash of water, or as an alternative to bourbon in Old Fashioned cocktails, with a few dashes of angostura bitters and brown sugar.

  • Good Housekeeping

Rye adds an extra spicy element to whisky, and Adnams makes its blend on homegrown soil with the addition of East Anglian malted barley. It’s matured in French oak for a minimum of five years and is equally delicious sipped neat or in a classic cocktail. The black pepper injects interest without overpowering the vanilla, butterscotch and maple notes, making this a well-balanced, enjoyable dram for all.

Description

Made from a mash bill of 25% East Anglian malted barley and 75% rye, Adnams Rye Malt Whisky has been matured in new French oak for at least five years. Winner of the World Whiskies Awards, Best English Rye three times, it has lovely aromas of warm vanilla, raisin fudge and black peppercorns with a smooth, rich, and spicy palate. Delicious on its own, or in any classic whisky cocktail.

How does it taste

On the nose you will find Christmas cake’s candied fruit and spices, marzipan, vanilla, chocolate, and black peppercorns. On the palate, there’s spicy rye bread, raisin fudge, honey, and hedgerow fruit. The finish is long, with notes of pepper, coffee, and a honeyed sweetness.

Great tasting whisky.

This is a lovely whisky, smooth with a unique bourbon hint. Not as enjoyable as the triple malt though, hence only 4 stars.
