From the picture-perfect hill-top town of Montepulciano, with its narrow streets crowded with souvenir shops, gelato kiosks and chic kit for the fashionista, one can view the glory of the southern Tuscan vineyards spread before one’s eyes. The Rosso is made from Prugnolo Gentile, Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo, the same varietal blend that goes into the estates Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, but this is the younger, simpler version with an easy charm and character. The family business was founded in 1938 by Altero and Maria Barbanera, whose son Luigi eventually handed on the baton to his sons Marco and Paolo, and the business now incorporates wines from Puglia and Sicily.

Rosso di Montepulciano

This was a very good example of a Rosso di Montepulciano, and even when just opened, was smooth and full-flavoured, without the edgy tannins found too often in wines of the area.
Montepulciano is a classic tuscan hilltop town, and definitely worth visiting!
