Nunzio Ghiraldi Lugana

Nunzio Ghiraldi Lugana "Il Grucione" DOC

Nunzio Ghiraldi grows Trebbiano di Lugana near Lake Garda. Trebbiano is often associated with lower quality, table wines. However, this strain of Trebbiano is known as Turbiana, which is yields wines of much greater character, a wine profile closely linked to a Verdicchio style, richer, fruit forward. Nunzio's grandfather purchased the Podere Sant'Onorata in the early 1950s. Set in the beautiful backdrop of nearby mountains and breathtaking views of the hills and lake the old vines are planted on ancient clay, mineral rich soil, which give the wines such clarity and purity of fruit. The wines are made with the minimum intervention, backed by the ergonomically designed winery and clever use of modern technology. This results in a wonderfully pure, stylish white wine of real class.

Description

Nunzio Ghiraldi’s extra effort is evident in this top example of Lugana. Only the highest quality fruit is selected from low-yielding vines. Optimal fruit expression is achieved by whole-bunch pressing, limited skin contact and the use of stainless steel. Straw yellow colour. The nose has remarkable and very fine aromas of white flowers, yellow peach and almond. Ripe exotic fruit notes, and delicate tomato leaf, a classic trait of Lugana" The palate is wrapped in a velvety freshness and balanced with minerality. The splendid vintage translates into a wine that has a great ability to evolve over time, improving year after year for over a decade. Drinking well now or set aside to watch it develop.
