The firm of Gonzalez Byass has been producing high quality sherry for 175 years and, although widely known for their Tio Pepe dry fino, they have a renown for their range of 'almencenista' sherries of which this Palo Cortado is a shining example of how good sherry can get. The Solera for this wine was created in 1862 in memory of the visit of Queen Isabella to the vineyards and the wine is of a minimum of 30 years of age. Palo Cortado is an exciting form of sherry that starts its life as a fino but suddenly turns itself into an Oloroso. The name means 'cut stick' and comes from the habit of the sherry winemakers of marking the barrels that declare themselves as this style with a stroke through the line that usually defines it as Fino.
