"Our family has cared for this estate, with its meadows, woodlands and buildings, and stewarded what it has produced since 1743" Wines have been grown on the soft chalk slopes of the South Downs around the Wiston Estate since Roman times. The current winery was inspired Pip Goring’s arrival at the estate in 1972 and her dream to plant a vineyard that would evoke memories of her childhood in South Africa’s Western Cape. In 2006, the Goring family planted a south-facing 16-acre site with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay vines. In the same year, Harry and Pip’s son Richard moved back to the Estate with his wife, Kirsty. Having worked on small scale organic farms in western Canada, they brought with them the desire to invest for the long term in the soil and the community. Pip’s dream, which was as much about bringing people together as it was about making wine, has now become a reality and fifteen years after the vineyards were first planted the Wiston Estate’s team of growers and winemakers, which has doubled in size, has become a dynamic focal point for its ever-growing community. The Wiston vineyards consistently produce exceptional fruit, and their winemaking philosophy is quite simply to guide it through the production process in as gentle a way possible, allowing the maximum expression of purity. They press their grapes immediately after picking, extremely gently, and ferment and age the wines in barrel and in tank prior to bottling. Wiston’s approach is both patient and respectful; making great quality wine takes time and fastidious attention to detail.
