Complex, layered and unique

For our Distiller’s Choice range, Head Distiller, John McCarthy has tasted a selection of different spirits of various ages, and maturing in a variety of casks, with the aim of finding something extra special. Resting Spirit of Broadside in Islay cask 04 has yielded just 307 bottles, packaged at 57.15% (100 proof). Born of beer and aged in oak, Spirit of Broadside is an eau-de-vie de bière and quite a rarity. Normally made from fermented fruit, eau-de-vies are quickly distilled to retain their lovely flavour. Spirit of Broadside is produced in a similar way and is the direct distillation of fermented beer. The resulting spirit is matured in French oak barrels, but for this limited release, it has then been finished in an Islay cask. This process has added those characteristic smoky, medicinal notes you would find in a peated whisky, and has given an additional layer of complexity to the most unique spirit in the Adnams portfolio. Broadside's strength of character is ideally suited to the process as its flavours carry through in this very different expression.

Description

Spirit of Broadside, our eau-de-vie de bière has aged in French oak for 5 years and finished in an Islay cask for six months. Released to celebrate Broadside 50th birthday year, it is testament to the versatility of our beloved strong ale. As it begins life as a fully formed beer, Spirit of Broadside retains some of those elements - namely caramelised malt, fruitcake flavours, and hints of hoppy astringency on the finish. Maturation in French oak adds spice and vanilla sweetness and the final resting in an Islay cask has finished this spirit with aromatic notes of peat and smoke. As well as being a truly individual after-dinner digestif, it is also a bit of a talking point. An intriguing alternative for the peated whisky connoisseur or inevitable eyebrow-raiser for the intrepid beer fan.

How does it taste

Strong, original Broadside beer is sent through our distillery but retains its flavours of caramelised malt and hints of hoppy astringency. Maturation in French oak barrels develops woody sweetness and warming spicy notes of nutmeg and cinnamon. Finishing in an Islay cask has added layers of smoke and medicinal notes of peat, and the hops provide a sorbet-like resinous on the finish, that cleanses your palate. Add a splash of chilled spring water to taste.
