It is with enormous sadness that we share the news of the passing of Karen Hester, who died on Saturday 4th January following a very brave, private and determined battle with illness over the past few months.

Karen, who retired in April 2024 as our Chief Operating Officer, has been an integral part of the Adnams story for over 36 years and was much loved by all.  Her phenomenal and inspiring career at Adnams began as a part time cleaner in 1988 and culminated in becoming the first female Executive Director in 2015. In the same year she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Suffolk.

Karen worked in many parts of our business, and in every area, she managed to lead, advise and enthuse those fortunate enough to work with her.

Karen’s career at Adnams saw her become Operations Director in 2007 and she was proudly awarded East of England Businesswoman of the Year in 2008. In 2013, Karen was further honoured with the CBI First Woman in Business of the Year award.

In addition to her work at Adnams, Karen dedicated herself tirelessly to several good causes, generously sharing her time and expertise as a local Magistrate from 2009 and the board chair for the charity Independence Matters.

Karen was recognised for her drive and success in supporting employees to reach their full potential and was renowned for her support, loyalty and commitment to our teams. Her legacy will continue in the business for many years to come. We often ask ourselves in the office, “what would Karen say or do?” when faced with a difficult decision and will continue to do so.

“I worked closely with Karen for most of her incredible journey at Adnams. Throughout, she was a wonderful colleague and source of inspiration everyday. Her wise counsel, compassionate leadership, sense of humour and approach that always saw her put other’s needs before her own set her apart in the world. Mama H, we will miss you!” Andy Wood.

Karen’s warmth, wisdom and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on us all. She was not just a colleague but a mentor and a friend to many. Her spirit will always be with us at Adnams. We will miss her dearly and cherish the memories and lessons she has left us with.

A service in Celebration of Karen’s Life will be held at St Peter & St Pauls Church, Wangford on Wednesday 12th February at 1pm for anyone wishing to pay their respects.
