Adnams Chairman, Jonathan Adnams, became one of the latest recipients of The Suffolk Medal, for his outstanding contributions to the county. He is now one of only a handful of people to be given this prestigious award. It is the highest honour the county of Suffolk can bestow upon one of its own.
The Suffolk Medal was created to recognise, reward and champion the exceptional contributions of Suffolk people that have made a fundamental and lasting difference to the county and its people. Those eligible for consideration are believed to have gone above and beyond expectations and are considered to have made an impact with actions that could range from a single feat to lifetime of service. Nominations come entirely from the general public in Suffolk and are decided upon by a panel of the county’s leaders.
Investiture took place today, 21st June 2023, on the Ipswich Cornhill as part of wider celebrations in the town for Suffolk Day. Jonathan collected his honour alongside fellow recipient Rebecca Crerar, the CEO of Suffolk Refugee Support. They became the 12th and 13th people to receive medals.
The Suffolk Medal itself was designed by the internationally renowned Suffolk artist, Maggi Hambling, CBE (a Suffolk Medal recipient herself) and reflects her view of the county. It is contained in an individually numbered presentation box made of Suffolk walnut, to personalise the receipt of the award, and is accompanied by a supporting certificate,
Clare, Countess of Euston, chair of the Suffolk Medal panel, and the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk said: “On our very own Suffolk Day, I am delighted that we are gathered in the truly historic surroundings of our County Town of Ipswich to present this year’s Suffolk Medals.
“We have two very special and truly exceptional Suffolk people to celebrate this year, unique in the incredible contributions they have made.
“We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for all they have already contributed to our county and hope this special honour will further elevate their ability to do even more.”
Jonathan is a true Suffolk man who has influenced the world of brewing, business, and community action from his Southwold home. Speaking at the presentation he said: ‘‘As a Suffolk boy, born and bred, I am proud and delighted to accept this honour of the Suffolk Medal today.’’
Jonathan was awarded an OBE for his commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and in November 2015 he celebrated 40 years at Adnams and involvement in our industry. He is a trustee and Chair of Adnams Community Trust and spent many years as part of the RNLI Lifeboat crew in Southwold.
